In bodybuilding, competitors appear in lineups and perform specified poses (and later individual 60 second posing routine) for a panel of judges who rank them based on symmetry, muscularity, size, conditioning, posing, and stage presentation. Athletes are grouped according to their weight, height plays no role in the grouping. The 7 Mandatory poses consist of:
– Front double biceps
– Front lat spread
– Side chest
– Side triceps
– Back double biceps
– Back lat spread
– Abdominal and thigh
– (with an 8th pose often added in) Most Muscular
Men’s Classic Physique takes four elements into account: ample muscularity (size), good definition (leanness), symmetry, and presentation (ability to display development during posing in the group comparisons). The targeted look is a little less extreme than in Men’s Bodybuilding. There will also be a 60 second posing routine for all classic physique competitors.
You will notice the posing trunks slightly larger covering more of the athlete than that of the bodybuilding trunks.
Athletes MUST respect a weight cap based on their height. At registration the athletes will be heighted and weighed and depending on their height there will be a maximum weight that the athlete can be.
The 5 mandatory poses:
- Front Double Biceps
- Side Chest
- Back Double Biceps
- Abdominals and Thighs
- Favourite Classic Pose
Men’s Physique competitors are judged on who has the most athletic-looking physique — based on shape and symmetry, combined with muscularity and overall condition. Athletes are grouped in height classes and there is no weight cap. Stage presence and poise are factors, athletes should appear confident. The competitors wear board shorts which cover their thighs. It is very important to display nicely shaped overall muscle, a small waist, good V-taper and good abs. Competitors are also judged for their male fitness model qualities. Good looks, grooming, and overall aesthetic appeal are taken into consideration as judges look for the best overall package.
There are only two main poses for this class:
- Front pose
- Back pose
But how they will be executed varies from each athlete.
Stage presence is KEY and judges will pay attention to their walk outs and how well they transition from front to back.
Of all the women’s division, competitors in this class sport the most mass. Athletes are grouped in classes of weight and height plays no role in grouping. The competitors will appear in lineups and perform specified poses (and later individual 60 second posing routine) for a panel of judges who rank them based on symmetry, muscularity, size, conditioning, posing, and stage presentation.

Physique judges are looking for symmetry, shape, proportion, muscle tone, and poise. Athletes are grouped in weight classes and height is not a factor. They wear two-piece suits with V-shaped bottoms and are barefoot onstage, and the posing is similar to a traditional bodybuilding with quarter turns as well as mandatory poses. Athletes will have a 30s individual introduction posing round and then during finals a 60s posing round to music of choice.
The 5 Mandatory poses are:
- Front double biceps – with open hand
- Side chest
- Side triceps
- Rear double biceps -with open hand
- Abdominal and thigh
These athlete’s poses an athletic physique’s that showcase more body mass in the hips, glutes and thigh areas. The upper body is developed but not to the same degree as the lower body. The division is between bikini and figure for women with a strong lower body and a lesser developed upper body.
Wellness competitors will have more body fat than bikini competitors and there will be a slight muscular separation, but no striations are encouraged. Abs are defined as they are in the women’s bikini division
There are ¼ turns that are required for posing comparisons. Each athlete will have 15s alone on stage to present their physique before comparison rounds. Model walks from front stage to back stage are used also to judge the athletes.
Bikini athletes are judged on their lean and firm physique scored on proportion, symmetry, balance, shape, hair, makeup and skin tone. The “X” factor is important, looking for that hour glass figure. Shoulder caps, a tiny waist, light amount of abs and tight glutes are what the judges will be looking for. Bikini competitors are judged on their overall look and stage presence.
